Back-to-School Rally
Weed & Seed hosted a Back to School Rally at Giddings Elementary School on September 12, 2006. Entertainment and words of wisdom were provided by Cleveland Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland, Cleveland Police 5th Dist. Commander Calvin D. Williams, Cleveland Police Officer Jeff Stanczyk, McGruff the Crime Dog and the Rockin’ Robots.
Although the students were entertained and actively involved in the rally, the goal of the event was inform them about the importance of education.
Councilwoman Cleveland spoke to the students about her childhood and the adversities she faced. Because her teachers encouraged and guided her she was able to overcome obstacles.
Officer Jeff, with assistance from McGruff the Crime Dog, emphasized that it doesn’t matter where you come from, but the choices you make that determines your future. Commander Williams instructed students to follow directions and listen to their teachers. He advised that the people that he encounters daily chose not to attend school or follow directions, and now they have to deal with him. He reminded students that they would rather deal with him in school than on the street because then he and his officers will not be as nice.
The students were also entertained by the Rockin' Robots. They engaged the students to participate in the rally by performing hits songs and dances mix in with a stay in school message.
Weed & Seed awarded baskets filled with school supplies to all students who had perfect attendance for the first quarter of the school year. Two classrooms who had perfect attended received pizza parties.
Refreshments were donated by Dave’s Supermarket and Tops Supermarket. The Cleveland Browns donated several autographed items that were awarded children. The highlight of the day was the $1,300 in school supplies donated to the students by Weed & Seed.
The event was a huge success! Hopefully this event will plant a seed in the students’ mind to “Be Cool, Stay in School.”
